So I have a bit of a pridictament here. My plates are expired now on both of our cars. Since we'll be moving most likely within the next 30 days I really hate to go out and renew our Indiana tags when I'll have to turn right around and buy Georgia tags. I let them ride past the 30 days and would continue to let them ride but I got a ticket in Northern Kentucky last week (my first ticket in a LONG time! :( ) and he fined me for the expired plates as well. :( The ticket says by Dec. 11th I have to prove that I have new tags. Is there a way I can get Georgia tags prior to actually closing on a house down there??? I just can't stand the thought of buying the tags in Indiana for less than a months use. :(

Advice??????

If you can prove that the vehicle will be primarily used in another state you should be able to get the new tags/plate there.

Bad news is you'll have to call the DMV, have fun with that one. We use AAA to do all of our boat registrations, might be worth calling them.

I'm pretty sure you can turn tags back in for a refund of unused time in Indiana. If that is the case I would just go ahead and buy Indiana tags.

I think you should renew as well and just let them run out when you are in Georgia. You will have to do some paperwork in Georgia after the tags are up so the gov. can get their taxes.

Jeff, remember you have to fill out a paper at the county clerks office stating that the car has been moved out of state. If you do not the taxes will start the next year. They have a form you can fill out. This is for KY and I have experience with company cars.

Is it legal for me to be a residence in GA w/ Indiana plates though??/ I guess at the current rate of trying to sell our home in Indiana it might not matter..........

If the company is paying for the move, expense the plates. I did with my last move.

That 8 bucks and an organ donation (like they want mine) is really going to break you.

Think they'll take the organs now and give me a discount on plates? After Mag mania fall edition I have a liver that only works about 25% of the time. I doubt that was from the booze though.......... :D

They are reasonable, they will wait until you wrap it around a telephone pole before the hand comes out.

I'd be trying to get plates in your new state. I doubt you actually need to show proof of residance.

I don't know about where you are moving to, but in PA & MD, you have 60 days after you move there to get your license & tags moved over. Of course, that's only true IF you get caught. :)

I was once in your same predicament & did the same thing (drove with expired tags for a couple months). Lucky for me, I didn't have any tickets in that time.

Also - I lived in PA for 4 years & never transferred my license. However, I did title my truck there (with my MD license).

Ga's 30 days to transfer your tags/license. Took about 4 months for me to get a ticket before I changed mine.

Check the website.....
http://www.dds.ga.gov/drivers/DLdata.aspx?con=1744173714&ty=dl

Doesn't look like you can get the license until you can prove residency. The tags will be done through the tag office you reside in so I doubt you can do that early either.

Just add $5k to your package you need to be worrying about revenue man!
