View Full Version : Need to Downsize Ski Boat

I currently own a 2004 ProStar - beautiful top notch boat. I am looking to get another MC, but a little older in good condition, with a great slalom wake (and would love a mini tower for long-line barefoot starts). Can anyone [U]suggest the years that offer the lowest wakes for slalom and barefoot crosses of the ProStar series (want a fuel injected machine since I live in Denver and need to power given the altitude)? If someone was really interested, i would also consider a trade.

Well, the earliest model year that you could get with a mini tower would be a 2002 PS 197/190.

You could always add a New Dimension tower to an older style 190/205.

How "old" are you talking about goin?

JohnnyB

I believe 1994 was the 1st year to have fuel injection. The 1991 - 1994Prostar had presumably the best slalom wake and the HO engine gave it the power to be a barefoot boat.

94 with the LT 1 should do the trick...:)

BarefootWt

I could go with a 94 in good shape - since it has has the fuel injection -would also like to go power slot. Adding a pole tower would be OK.

is the HO engine the LT1?

I believe there was a 285hp HO Ford engine for that year and then a LT1 which IIRC, was somewhere around 300-310hp. Both you could get w/ a Slot.

sorry - you are right. i have an 04 and wanting to downsize (it is great for footin and slalom, just need to downsize). it sounds like the 1994 might be the right boat with fuel injection and either an HO or LT1 motor and power slot -- my bad....

In the model years that your looking at, I wouldn't be too concerned about the power slot. If you find one great, but most likely you'll come across alot of better deals with the standard transmission. Switch out to an Acme 541 prop and you'll be plenty satisfied with the pull :)

You'd be pleasantly suprised with the LT1 or the HO motor I do believe. The older Prostars were lighter & had less wetted surface, therefore giving them more giddy-up. I doubt you'd be dissapointed w/ either the HO or LT1

My opinion from one footer to another:

I went from a Barefoot 200 to a 94 205 with a stock 275 horse non powerslot set up, at first I was a little disappointed with the pull but them I changed the prop to a Acme 541 and it made a world of difference in the pull. It now pulls my 210 pound arse out of the hole just fine. I also used to have an 87 190 with the powerslot and the wake had more turbulance than the non slot.

As for the wake of the 94, it is not a Barefoot boat but the wake for footing is pretty darn good with a good pull.

Barefoot, I know of someone with a REALLY nice 94 PS205 with low hours, super clean, AND it already has the Acme 541 prop on it. I've personally ski'd the boat, it runs great and looks great. Why not trade yours for his???;)

13 x 12.5 or 13 x 12. It's NIBRAL but it's CNC'd. I kid you not, it made my 95 PS190 run like a TOTALLY different boat over the stock prop. MUCH better hole shot, a little more top end, and best yet, its REALLY smooth and quiet.

I would recommend an ACME prop upgrade on the 91-94 as well...the 541 made my 92 PS190 a whole different boat. Also had great luck with ACME over the stock prop on my newer boat as well!!

do you know if the wake is different between the 190 and 205 - like maybe the 205 is longer by 1.5 inches (20.5 - 19.0) so the slalom and barefoot wakes may be different? or not? thanks for your comments!

Wakes are definetly different, you'd prefer the 190 for wake crosses and barefooting longline. Will have a smaller table.

I would also consider looking for a 99+ SportStar, they are the 95-95 Prostar Hull, after 99 and newer they have 350 TBI(Predator) standard. A friend even has a 98 with a LT1. Mine pulls strong with the CNC prop. Since the SportStar have simpler interiors, they tend to be less money than similar year ProStars. I wish I had the cash to trade up with you.

I ski'd Footin's 205 back to back to my old 95 PS190 and the wake differences were negligable. Now that was Slalom skiing, not barefooting though....

Prostar hulls go
87-90
91-94(93 some EFI, 94+ all EFI)
95-97
98-00
01-02

'87-'90 are same
'85-'86 rainbow stripe

What's wrong with your 2004? Is it really bigger than say a '94 prostar?

H20skeefreek
11-26-2006, 11:37 PM
nnnnnnn....wrong answer. '85 was NOT the rainbow warrior hull. I don't think that he litteraly means "down-size". I know I wouldn't. And except for the Powerslot cuttout 78-87 or 88 has the same hull.

The wake was better on the 92-94 series PS's but they had some spray issues at shorter line lengths. THe 95-97 series 190's had no spray/much less spray issues but maybe a slightly larger slalom wake.

The slalom wakes behind those boats are both excellent, though the '95-97 has less spray. Not sure what kind of characteristics you like in a barefoot wake, but both boats are very good, IMO. The 95-97 hull has a very soft table- its probably my favorite boat to barefoot behind.

Ive skied behind a '94 and '95, both with the LT1 and 1:1. Both have a great holeshot. The '95 has a definite advantage on the top end though- it seems to get more hull out of the water. Its the fastest boat in our group- it'll do 50 or so. The '94 handles better (flatter in the turns) but it also rides rougher in choppy water.

The 310 hp LT-1 Corvette motor was available as an option in 93 along with the standard 351 and the 285hp 351 HO. 94 was strictly Chevy's.
