Besides 1980 what years did mastercraft build the boats with the textured style top? why did they do that and why did they stop and go to the smooth finish?

I had a '76 that had that textured finish on all topside surfaces.

It looked a bit like a textured ceiling that had been knocked down with a trowel.

The texture finish was created by Rob Shirley by lining the mold with vinyl. It was his version of non-skid.

Hard to keep clean as well.

I had an 81 and it was textured. Hard to shine and keep oxidation off. You can see a pic of the boat under "Other Mastercrafts" in gallery but it doesn't really show the textured top.

I had an 82 with this finish. It was not hard to clean as such, but waxing was a different story. I'd love to have another for the uniqueness. The mold liner was the material that was used for the interior. Matched identically.

I am fairly confident that they started doing this right away and continued to do so until 1983... I believe thats when they redesigned the engine box, dash, and windshield.

Some 82's had the textured top, later 82's did not. Some had the rounded windsheilds, some had the square style. 1982 production was a mix of old (textured top) and newer smooth surface styles. Take a look at some of the boats listed on Boat Trader.com in that vintage. You will see some of both styles. Even some 81's had the old style dash with square windsheilds.
I had a 77 with a textured top. It was kinda a pain to keep clean and wax. It was also slippery when it was waxed too. I have prefered the smooth finish myself.
