I'm in the market for a new slalom ski since my ol' O'brien Competitor is a bit worn out and in need of replacement. My question is - what is a good ski to get nowadays? I've been skiing since I was 4 (now 22) and it's safe to say I know what I'm doing. I'm also 6'4'' and about 220lbs if that is a factor.

68" to 70" Ski should about right for your size. Do you ski the course?
Are you skiing 36mph? Off hand Goode 9800- O'brian SixAm- HO Monza- D3-X5- & If it suits you a Connelly F1 (least expensive of the bunch).

What length is the competitor?

It's 68''. I don't typically ski a course since no one around here has one up on a regular basis (but if one is available I can do most of it) and I don't really have much interest in putting one up. I do ski at 36mph. So what would be the differences between a 68 and a 70?

36mph won't have you sinking in the water if your ski is a little shorter. The slower you ski the more surface you need to keep you going .

Buy last years (06 or 05) model of any of the skis I listed other than graphic's their is little change & the savings are substantial!

so stick with 68'' and get an older one... thanks for the help!

Considering your hight/weight, I'd go with a 70". It is probably worth calling Wiley's Ski Shop (google them). They typically carry the prior year model at great markdowns and are also great for advice on sizing, etc.

If you have a ski shop in your area, it is probably worth demoing skis.....always nice to try before you buy.

I'm 5'6" and 160lbs....I ski a 67" Mapple and love it. Just started skiing the course a couple years ago.....not great at it yet, but love the ski!
