Check engine light 1999 230 VRS 5.7 Vortec

I have sent an email to MC but while waiting for reply I thought I would ask the board.
On my 1999 230 VRS should the check engine light come on when the ign. switch is on and the engine is not running? It is the 5.7 Vortec. Be aware that MC say on some models it does not. I am not the original owner so I have no frame of refrence.

To avoid confusion my light is not coming on.

My 1998 SS does the same..... I have never had any problem - it just lights up when the key is put in that position -for reading the gas guage or something....

Yep it's suppose to come on. As long as it does not stay on after you start it. Same as a car the check engine light is on until it's started.
