The wife is looking at the Acura MDX. Is this a good tow vehicle? It will be replacing a 04' Jeep GC Limited w/ V8. We probably won't buy new, maybe a year or two old certified car. How would this do pulling a 197? All comments that pertain to our use would be appreciated.

Should do okay pulling a 197, but I think you could do better than the MDX. Here's my advice. Test drive the MDX, then drive straight over to a VW dealer and test drive a base V-8 powered Touareg (which comes with a lot of options included). They can be had out the door for about the same price. I can't see how anyone would drive those back to back and pick the MDX. And the Treg is a beast of a tow vehicle. You won't even notice the 197 back there.

Edit: just realized you said used. DO NOT buy a used Touareg.

Why wouldn't you want to buy a used one?

New ones are rated at 2.5/5.0 by JD Power. I've seen some pretty bad quality reports on most of what VW does.

The 04 Tregs and some of the 05 Tregs were riddled with problems. A large percentage of used Tregs out there are either buybacks or people who got fed up and dumped them early (myself included). If I were going to by a Touareg, I would only buy a new 06 or 07. And I would only do so for 15% or more below sticker.

T-reg is an amazing tow vehicle for a unibody SUV. V10 TDI I hear is even better than the great V8. Jamie

Yeah, I can tell you from my experience that the V-8 is a terrific tow vehicle.

I'm sure the V-10 with its 550 ftlbs. of torque is a monster, but I think anyone who spends $65k+ on a VW needs to have their head examined...:D

Aside from the quality issues, the big negative about VW is the dealer service is absolutely horrible.

The new MDX has a 300hp engine. Should tow pretty well. I have an '04 Acura and love it. Their service and quality are top notch.

BTW their resale value are going to be better than almost everything in the lux SUV market.

My sister has a MDX and they tow their 19' Four Winns a few times a year. Their complaint was that it is pretty squatty in the back with the boat hooked up. Seems to be a decent vehicle, but I would like something a little more heavy duty for the amount I trailer

Funny, my sister has an MDX that they tow their Maristar 230 with. Granted, they only have to go a few miles for the ramp, but it does tow. I couldn't believe that they had not purchased a used Ram 2500 Cummins yet.:D

I would imagine a 197 would be fine behind the MDX, though...
