I guess our vote doesn't count.
BTW, your money is being wasted too -- federal funds are being used as well.

St Petersburg Times
This airport doesn't fly
A Times Editorial
Published September 23, 2006

St. Joe Co., whose Florida land holdings are bigger than Rhode Island, wants taxpayers to build a new Panama City airport in the middle of nowhere. Price tag: $300-million. Guess who owns the undeveloped land around the proposed airport site. St. Joe, of course, and kowtowing officials can't cave fast enough.

The Federal Aviation Administration just approved a plan to move the airport to the new site more than 20 miles outside the city. The decision wasn't based on need. The city has an adequate airport where traffic has declined by half over the past five years. The airport has only a dozen daily commercial flights. Bay County voters don't want a new airport, either. They soundly rejected the plan in a nonbinding referendum. The new airport also would be an environmental disaster, filling nearly 2,000 acres of wetlands and leading to the destruction of 7,000 more acres for nearby development. All of this would threaten the beautiful woods, bay and beaches cherished by residents and outsiders flying into the area.

But this is Florida, where St. Joe is no common Joe. "The company gave more than half a million dollars to the state Republican Party over the past eight years, and they control the statehouse," said Linda Young, director of the Clean Water Network of Florida, one of a dozen organizations that oppose the plan. The timing is convenient for St. Joe. Its residential developments in the Panhandle are struggling because of the recent downturn in real estate. The company announced it would lay off 10 percent of its employees. And resales of speculative purchases in its developments are flooding the housing market, including nearly a third of the properties in its upscale WaterColor community.

But why wait for the next market cycle when you have near-biblical powers? With an enormous new airport, St. Joe can turn wilderness into prime real estate and send taxpayers the bill.

I can not find the lnk, but here in Southern California, an arson started a brushfire that burnt 60 square miles, several structures and killed five firefighters. 4 died immediately, while the fifth passed away yesterday with 95% of his body burnt... I think that this guy should be burnt at the stake, supposedly he is already a convicted arson!

This is in your neck of the woods atlfooter. I can't believe they fired this guy. What's wrong with a police chief asking his officers to get in shape? Who knows, they may need to chase down and/or restrain a criminal or two???

This Happened in my parent's neighborhood...

Giving out candy on Halloween, man is shot in the face

The victim is recovering from surgery after the attack; cops seek three masked gunmen.

By KEN LEWIS, The Times-Union

As the 67-year-old Jacksonville man answered the door on Halloween night, he told his wife, "These kids are bigger."

They yelled "trick-or-treat," then shot him in the face, police said.

The victim is recovering from surgery, and police are searching for three young men last seen in a black Nissan with tinted windows. The three men were wearing camouflage clothing with masks over their faces.

The names of the victim and witnesses are not being published by the Times-Union because the shooters are at large.

Residents of the waterfront neighborhood of Empire Point are bewildered by what they called the apparent randomness of the shooting. Halloween will never be the same.

"It's nuts," said one neighbor.

A motive was unclear, according to the Sheriff's Office report.

The victim, owner of a real estate-related corporation, is described as a community leader with old ties to Jacksonville. His late father owned a car dealership. Many family members were with him at Shands Jacksonville hospital, his niece said Wednesday.

An executive from his company said he is a great man.

"The sad thing is, he loves Halloween, and he loves kids coming over, trick-or-treating," the executive said. "It's just unbelievable that this could happen to him."

When the resident was shot about 8:30 p.m. on Empire Avenue, a group of teens were just a few houses away. One young man heard a sound like a firecracker, and then they heard calls for help.

"This car flies by, going like 65 miles per hour," the 16-year-old said. "It was a few feet from hitting me. I yelled, 'Slow down.'"

Speeding is very uncommon in the neighborhood, which is lined with tall trees and elegant brick houses.

The victim had been passing out candy all evening to neighborhood children, his niece said.

"When he went to hand them the candy, they shot him point blank," the niece said.

On the news this morning, they said that a "person of interest" related to this new fire was going to be in court today for two other fires that he set in June.

Mitch,
I am an EMT (Paramedic) in Alberta and I have shoveled drunks off the pavement at all hours of the day. Even a fatality b/c of drinking and driving at 1pm! (This one was kinda interesting, he was driving a camper van and the 18' boat he was trailering ended up in the back of his van!! (No one but the drunk was injured or killed))

Didsbury, Alberta, Canada

Horrendous is how police and a veterinarian are de-scribing abuse that left a young dog close to death after it was bound, tortured and dragged about 100 metres along a Didsbury road. A 19-year-old man, whose family owned the female dog, has been charged with the crime. A 17-year-old boy has also been charged. Dr. Andy Mencarelli said he received a call from some concerned residents after a dog, a lab/collie cross, was discovered Sunday night on a road, lying in a pool of blood.

From what I hear these guy is going to get off on cruelty charges only, without jail time. Maybe a little light??? I think there should definately be a psychological evaluation forced on him at very least in addition to the fines. Am I the only one that has heard that a good chunk of or serial killers and sickest murderers started off torturing animals???

I feel a post your puppy thread coming on!!!??? This pic is of a puppy I just about ran over on the highway in Hinton Alberta. I saw it was just a puppy by the way it was running so I stopped and went after her. She peed all over me when I grabbed her and then I saw what was around her neck: a sigh saying "Free to good home". I teared up right away and my wife began balling.

Anyways, I am not able to look after her, but my mom and dad adopted her. My wife Holly named the little german shepherd border collie cross "Keeper". Keeper is doing very well and kicking my moms Rotties butt!!

(Please don't assume we Albertans are ALL bad dog owners by my last two storeys)

It wasn't just peeing on you, it was marking its territory.

Where are the hind legs?

IIRC, I knew someone with a three-legged dog that he used to call "Tripod".

She has all four, and she peed if she was scared until recently. Now it is done out of excitement. It can be common for females, they get excited and role to their side and piddle a bit. This is a submissive behaviour. I am starting a "Mans Best Friend" thread.
