View Full Version : Foam filling

I have a 76 stars and stripes and would like to open up the space under the bow, but it is filled top to bottom with what looks like a sprayed closed cell foam for flotation. Does this foam provide any structural support or can I just rip it all out?

I have the same thing on my 78 and so does one of my friends who has a 76. He cut a small hole underneath the steering wheel and took some of the foam out for storage.

how much would some be? I'm looking to clean house and take it all out. I'm counting on putting in some kind of ribbing for reinforcement, but I'm just curious if taking all out is a really bad mistake.

Im not sure about structural support i do know that the foam is for floatation. I also know that it gets pretty messy and is a big pain to get it out. I would call a dealer first and get their opinion on it

Dealers dont know any thing about the old boats. Thats just a fact of life.

have any of you thought about filling the outside area between the stringers and hull with foam like the later model S&S's?

If it's stuck to the sides and the bottom, it is going to give a little support just because it binds the two sides together, it all depends on how much you are taking out, and where in relation to the stringers it is. closer to the middle, more support, closer to the edges of the boat, the foam probably won't be holding as much.

But, I bet they will make you a deal on a new one with plenty storage!

from what I can tell the foam fills the entire bow area, both side of the stringers, center almost to the top deck. I should have a better idea after this weekend... I just about have all the rivets out to remove the top deck.

During my rebuild of 82 Stars and stripes I did not replace the foam between the stringers in error. My question is should I do it now what are the benefits of the foam ie boat height in water, noise reduction, structural support.
