Anyone here has experience with log splitters?

I'm looking to pick one up and have only used a rental splitter in the past, which worked fine for us.

I don't want to spend alot of money but want to get something that will last.

Are the manual log splitters any good? I just saw an ad for one of those. How about the splitters that are sold at HD or Menards?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Pops just bought one, I will check with him as to which one he got. I know he got a better deal from Lowe's than Northern Tool and Equipment. I think it is a 30 ton. It works extremely well.

We have a splitter that does a nice job. It has a 6.75 Briggs and is rated at 26 ton. It has plenty of grunt and has split every kind of wood, even the more stuburn twisted grain wood.

We bought ours at Sams club, they had best deal at the time.

We have a 20 ton with a 5 hp briggs. Bought it at Walley world has held up great for about 10 years.Splits about 10 cords ayear.I split rounds up to 3 feet in diameter with no problem with it.Make sure you get one that splits in the vert. and horz. positions if your going to split large rounds.

Oh yeah! The vert position is a lifesaver for the big ones. It kills my back to use like that though. Make sure the one you get has a two stage pump. Most of the larger tonnage ones do.

my FIL's got one that's got a Briggs motor on it.....

absolutely essential to run Sta-Bil through it.....:twocents:

in fact, he only runs stabilized fuel through it now

it works great, he picked it up from Atwoods farm supply around here

Log splitters are pretty simple - a Brigg/Stratton engine, hydraulic pump and a ram. The more expensive log splitters get more spendy on the basis of power and frills.

I've found that the cost of having the wood split isn't much more than having it cut, so unless you plan on having your wood delivered as 8 foot lengths which you then cut, you can get a lot of wood split for the cost of a good log splitter.
