just noticed this past weekend that my 05 xstar with mcx has a rattle (appparently in the transmission) when in reverse. It is not particularly loud but hasn't always been there. I have 310 hours on the boat and had the transmission fluid and filter changed 30 hours ago. Anyone have any ideas what this could be? It doesn't sound like my old '99 205V did jus before the clutch blew apart. thanks in advance. going up to 87 tomorrow. anybody want to ride in west-central Mississippi? Hotty Toddy.

Are you running Dexron III or 15W40 in the transmission?

Oooh. Key question...

If it's functioning OK, not slipping, I'd change the fluid and make sure there's no water or burnt smell. If it's ATF (red) that's in there now, you could switch to the same 15W40 you use in your engine. Hurth switched over from ATF to 15W40 because people were complaining of rattling while idling in reverse.

I would assume the dealer put 15w40 in. the transmission has a sticker on the fill cap telling you to use 15w40. the fluid is clear and appears top be oil

I'd ask your dealer, certainly make sure it's been addressed by them at some point before the 3-year engine/transmission warranty runs out.
