View Full Version : Upper Midwest MC Gathering??????

After hearing about all of the fun people have at Mag Mania I was wondering how many people would be interested in attending a similar gathering in the Upper Midwest next year. There seems to be a large number of members from Northern Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and one from the U.P.:D . Please post if you would be interested in something like this and any suggestion of a location. I think that Northern Wisconsin(Minocqua-54548) would be a great spot since there are 1000's of lakes and lots of nice lodging (and I live here;) ). Hopefully we can figure something out and not let all of the Mag Mania attendees have all of the fun

Sounds great!!! I think it is best to set a date early, then there are no excuses for having other plans. I am in the Milwaukee area, West Bend to be exact. I would bring my boat too as long as nobody sinks it for being brand-x (non-MasterCraft).

The wife and I might be interested depending on what we would think of to do with the kids....
Lake Dubay , driven by it... very centrally located S. of Wausau and a quick trip since it's just off I-39. But I would seriously consider having a local like DatDude find a place a bit more remote where the water might be even less crowded. Some place we could rent a house would be cool - we might be able to bring another couple or 2.
If there's enough interest, put some suggestions on a poll. . . .

A little known fact is that Wisconsin actually owns the U.P. and is thus considered "Upper Midwest". Lower Michigan is too far East to be considered "Upper Midwest" and therefore those residents must attend an "East Coast" event:uglyhamme ........JUST KIDDING. The problem is there is no easy way to get to Wisconsin from Lower Michigan except for the two ferries. This does not have to be limited to Upper Midwest people.......anyone can come:D .
Some people have mentioned Lake DuBay......I know nothing about that lake except that it is South of Wausau. The parts you can see from 51 look a little stumpy?
The possibilities are really endless when it comes to lakes, lodging, activities, etc. We have everything from the busy Minocqua chain of lakes with bars/restaurants, ski show, hotties on pontoon boats, etc. to the smaller lakes that may be better suited for watersports on a weekend. There is usually smooth water somewhere on the chain at any given time. Hopefully we can figure something out!

When we were down in Ft Worth we did find a bar that closed at 2:00. So we closed her down and had a ton of booze back in a conference room and then played poker until 5:30am. It really sucked walking (stumbling) back to my room while the hotel staff is setting up the breakfast buffet. eeessshhh

Those are both reasons I am pushing for Minocqua. I think it would be awesome to have a bunch of MC's rafted together watching the Bats ski, and we wouldn't have to travel very far;) .
On a more serious note, I really feel that Minocqua is a great area to have such a gathering. We have plenty of awesome lakes, lodging, entertainment and tourist type shopping for those that may not be into boats and water sports.
I sure hope this all comes together

I would NOT suggest the Fox River in St. Charles, IL. EXTREMELY shallow, and there is only about 2 miles of usable water that is semi safe depth.

I could bring a few people and a few more boats. Perhaps Bosakis would let everyone use their docks on a weekend if you wanted to have an in-water boat show of everyone's MC's. Either Bosakis or Lakeside Landing would be a good spot. There's a wooden boat show at Bosakis once a year so I bet they would be receptive to the idea.

I would be in for a trip to do lots of boarding, skiing, and a little beer drinking. In WI would be ok for me, just would want it to be summer and warm. Finding a lake with good water would be a concern. A camp ground on the water would be a cool place to have it at.
I have stayed in the Upper Dells at a campground on the water that is pretty nice. The water does get choppy though.

I grew up in Rhinelander and spent a lot of time skiing, fishing and sailing on Lake Tomahawk and Lake Minocqua. I agree with Datdude that the Minocqua chain of lakes would be a great place to hold this (although I now live in Detroit and probably wouldn't attend because of distance.) The State Campground on Lake Tomahawk is excellent with nice facilities and a boat launch, although there is not dock space after launching. Indian Shores is a private campground next door, that may have some dock space. I'm not sure of the resort and hotel facilities on the chain. It's an interesting trip through the chain to get to Lake Minocqua and the Thirsty Whale or Bosackis, but the trip has a lot of "no wake" riding along the way.
For those with the MC "Fish and Ski"s, you would have the opportunity to pull out a 10 lb walleye or 40 lb muskie after a day of skiing.

Of course it varies from year to year but usually the end of July and first couple weeks of August will see the warmest water temps. Some of the lakes have darker "stained" water and they seem to warm a bit more than those with very clear water. Warm water in Northern Wisconsin usually means 80 or so.....it will still cool you off when you jump in.

That is a true statement. It is not as bad as UMP's water, but it never seems to get as warm as the water at my parent's place in Central Wisconsin. I really think that Late July or Early August would be a great time to have an event like this. I remeber a few years ago when it was in the mid 50's and rain on July 4th weekend:mad:

Last week in July looks best for us.
jlf and husband would consider a trip up north, let me see 12 hours or maybe like 5 or so. We had 21 attendees to MM2 this year. Would consider towing up the boat too depending on how many people and boats we'd have. Of course I'd might nudge erk to bring the sex statr back...that boat rocks...even though I whined a bit about the scary wicked wake behind it.
We are pretty much open for next summer but I agree that set a date eary so people can plan and mark off the calendars.

That might be worth looking into. I am guessing it may be a little on the pricey end? I have heard that it is a great facility, however I am not as familiar with Trout Lake as I am with the Minocqua Chain. I was thinking that either The Beacons or The Pointe on Lake Minocqua would work as they both have dockage. Nitschke's Northern resort is also very close to The Beacons and offers condo lodging with docks as well. All of these lodging options are a very short walk from downtown Minocqua which has a lot of options for dining and shopping.

If we are thinking the summer what about some sort of camp ground then we don't have to worry about damage to rooms or someones house. Camp grounds are probably going to be cheaper too.

These look good, I am also interested in a camp ground option. Do you know the local MC dealer in Minocqua? Maybe he might have some options or be able to get us a deal and one of the local resorts? One problem I have always had in getting a place in that area is you typically have to pay for a week time period, rather than just an extended weekend. So a camp ground or resort with hotel rooms is most likely the best option. Mid-August would be the best time for us, but if we get it on the books early enough I can work with what ever date. Thanks for looking into the options!

I've stayed at Indian Shores and it is nice. A decent amount of dockage, but there is a little ride through a channel to get to the lake. The campground isn't quite on the lake. Any of those hotel/resorts would be fine. I think the pointe would be the most convenient to town, but none are really too far out of the way.
Check out www.eaglewaters.com too. I've stayed there and it is really nice. Probably only weekly rentals, however... and Eagle River is moderately less cool than Minocqua.

We're fortunate to have residents on here that can help figure out a place - thanks guys! The challenge I guess is good water access and some kind of dock arrangement.
I sure hope we can get this into our summer next year. It may take a little work since we have a new baby coming in November. But anything is possible and the wife and I will need a little getaway or 2 next year anyway!

What is the challenge of getting boats in there?
erkoehler
09-19-2006, 01:46 PM
Yes, the camp does use the lake for watersports, but they have their sabbath on Saturdays which makes for awesome water all weekend, and they close up shop in early August.
The challenge to getting boats in is, no public access, and no true boat ramp. We put our runabout in through someones back yard, but there isn't enough of a slope to get a MC in there. I tried to get my 190 in last memorial day, and couldn't :(
The camp however does get a two BU's in, so it can be done :)

Can I get a "Hell yeah" I'm in! I've been checking out the Mag Mania Posts and thought it would be about time to get something Midwest cookin'. Count me In. Count my boat in. I can bring my Portable course with too if we find the right spot to drop it in.
I'm game for anywhere, maybe we should take a poll and have people post how many miles they are away from different locations, Northern WI, Southern WI. Central WI. I think we've got a lot of folks in the IL. area, and since Northern wisconsin is kind of dead end maybe we could get a better turnout if we migrated a little farther south. Does anyone know Dr Michaels? I hear he's got a pretty good site to set a few personal bests in the course...:D

There are a few location possibilities
1. Minocqua Chain of Lakes
2. Erk's Lake
3. Somewhere else?
The advantage to the Minocqua chain is the amount of water(6000 acres?) with more cruising options, restaurants, bars, ski show, lodging, etc
The advantage to Erk's Lake is that we may have the place to ourselves
Since I don't have a 2007 calendar handy I will suggest the last weekend in July or the first weekend in August as the weather is less of an issue and the water will be warm
The semi-difficult part will be getting everyone the type of lodging they want. It seems that most resorts/campgrounds require a one week stay during the peak Summer season.
If the event is actually held in Minocqua......"Minocqua Mathem" seems to be fitting. If the event is at Erk's place.........."Erkfest" sounds fine
erkoehler
09-20-2006, 02:10 PM
I can tell you right now that the last weekend in July and the first week in August is booked up at our place :(
The lake is 95 acres....plenty for a slalom course, and there is always good water w/ limited use. We could put a boat or two on my lake then keep the rest out for other lakes. As I have ski hours :( 9-6pm.
#47of100TeamMC
09-20-2006, 02:13 PM
As far as location... I think we can all agree that the 3 main concerns we would have is: (In no particular order of course.)
1) Adequate Lodging. (as I think almost nobody pulls their boat tandem behind a camper, and Some of us aren't "tenting" type people.)
2) Smooth water. (well this one is obvious)
3)Semi-central location to the majority of attendee's
If these few items are met, I think the rest will fall into place. and we would have the best turn out possible.
I checked out the websites for the resorts listed in the Minocqua area and The Pointe Resort looks really nice.
What if we had it somewhere that required a week stay... would anybody be opposed to spending a week on the lake? it's like a vacation. Or is that just simply too much time for people to commit to?

Erk's place sounds like a fantastic skiing lake, but when talking about an event of this nature, there may be a potential for 15 to 30 drunken fools making a big commotion at his nice, small resort on a private lake. The Minocqua chain is more appropriate for drunken fools!:D

Ok, it's done, Minocqua Area is the Official Location for Minocqua Mayhem 2007. Set done with. Now lets talk dates... Last week in July is July 27-29(friday-sunday) I like this option for a few reasons... 1) It's a long ways away and is easily planned for 10months in advance. 2) it's not near any holidays closest is 4th of July which is 3.5 weeks prior. so shouldn't interfere with anybodies Family plans for holidays. 3) Ok all I have is 2 for now...

I can sleep in the boat?!?!?! Thanks Dad...You're the best! The bottom of the boat is....um...where I usually pass out....no, wait...I mean where I usually fall asleep. Yeah that's it...
Anyways, here is my thought, whether it be the popular opinion or not. We won't be able to please everyone, but we can certainly try. I suggest Minocqua just for the reasons that were suggested…more cruising options, restaurants, bars, ski show, lodging, etc.
Lodging I don’t think will be that big of an issue. If we say we have 40 people staying Friday-Sunday (or whatever days), I’m sure booking a place this early for next year would allow for some sort of accommodation on the part of the place we stay. We’ll most likely get a group rate or something that will be cheaper as a whole then if we rented places individually.
I’m cool with the dates…Last week in July or first in August sounds great. It could work out perfectly if those two weekends are booked at Erk’s place. Then we really don’t have to decide on location…it’s already worked out.
You know, even if it’s not clam water 24/7 of the time, at least we could do some floating, drinking, and gettin’ to know each other.
To me, we’re basically planning a weekend for a couple o’ hundred of our closest friends! If we have a floating party of 5 MC’s, you know their will be others that will want to join the festivities. And how could you know, we’re all super fun, cool people.
So anyways, that’s my thoughts on the situation…

I know nothing about the Eagle River Chain except that it supposedly exists:D
There is a campground that is 2 doors down from my house but it is not on the Minocqua Chain. Their website is www.patricialakecampground.com
This campground is a 5 minute drive to The Pointe and a 10 minute Drive to The Beacons. I am not campground afficianado, but it looks decent from the road. The lake it is located on is about 30 acres.....so no skiing:cool:
Ther are also a few hotels on "the island" that are across from the public beach and town docks. This would give them access to get in a boat from there. We could shuttle people out to "Beer Can Island" to party! The problem would be getting the Leine"s truck out the the island..........we can figure something out
The ideal thing would be to have some groups staying at a place like the Beacons or The Pointe to have access to the water and docking and have the camping folks simply hang out as a guest of the people staying on the lake(if that is allowed?)
We should do an official head count of interested parties so I can get an idea of how many people we are looking at having. Then I can make some phone calls to get group rates and what not. I am not sure if we start another thread or just PM me with the number of people? Suggestions would be appreciated
Hey guys the beer truck sounds like a great plan, but I am not so sure it will fit in any of the boats!! Even if Erk brings the Sex Star again, I mean that thing is a tank but I still don't think it will fit a beer truck. Cans fit in most coolers pretty well. I don't know about all of you, while I plan an tippin' a few back, I still plan on spending my time on the water.

Count me in for 2 people for sure. (my wife and me) so 1 room, we'd love to stay at the pointe. I'm sure we might be able to get another couple to join us as well. I'll work on that.
What happens if we tie off the beer truck behind a few of the boats and hydroplane it over to the island? Or is that too risky in loosing a truck load of perfectly good Lienies...I'll be sure to bring my snorkel and goggles just in case.
Depending on weekend you can count jlf for two, me and hubby, possibly one other couple as well. That would make 4.

It would be helpful to know what type of lodging you would like as well so I can get approximate numbers for the various lodging establishments.
It appears as though the last weekend in July is the favorite right now. Someone had asked about September and that is pushing it. The lakes cool off fast and the weather up here can be 80F or 50F in September.

Camping if the campground is on the lake. Camping if the campground is close to the lake. Resort if the campground is not on or close to the lake and the resort is.
Thank you
Jason
What is your definition of "close"? There is one campground that is on the chain of lakes but it is about 25 minutes by boat(mostly slow no wake channel) from the other lodging on the lake. There is a campground near my house that is a 5 minute drive by car to town/lake.

On the lake is great, I don't care if we have to putt putt to the ski spot or putt putt to the party spot. If I can leave the boat in the water and get to the spot(s) I will be one happy dude. Besides, that will give Ryan time to put on his suit and coil up the lines and complain about how other people did an awful job coiling up the lines.

I am guessing most would be leaving town Sunday afternoon so lodging would be Friday night and Saturday Night? If you were planning on staying until monday(or beyond) please let me know
Eventually we will get all of this figured out:D

I don't know anything about the Harbor campground, but I have stayed at the Chain 'O Lakes campground. It is about as far away from town as you can get by boat. Plus, I mentioned earlier that the Indian shores campground on Lake Tomahawk was on a channel, not right on the lake.... I was mistaken. I was thinking of this Chain 'o lakes campground.
I think overall the Minocqua chain is far preferable to Eagle river.

I would be fine with the Eagle River chain but I know nothing about it and would be of very little assistance in planning. If anyone knows about the chain and the lodging/dining situation and would like to help out I would be fine with that. I have met the owners - a buddy of mine used to work the beer garden, back in his college days. They would be great to work with and they have plenty of docks. The lake Scattering Rice is around the corner and usually has decent water, since it is out of the way. The Eagle River Chain has a lot to offer, with plenty of resturants and bars that you can pull the boats up to, including the resturant and beer garden at the Chanticleer!

The proximity to the Eagle River Chain from ERK's depends on where on the chain people would be staying. I am going to say it is approx 20 minutes to Minocqua from ERK's. My vote is for Minocqua, but I am biased since I live here. I am going to offer my services to help organize this event if you guys want to use Minocqua as the spot. I know from a visitors standpoint it means a lot to have somebody know where all the shallow spots on the lakes are and where to stay away from and where is ok. I really appreciate things like that. I'm sure we all do since we don't want to have to ask Erk to bring a trailer load full of parts with him for the "oops, I no longer have a prop or rudder" scenarios. (thanks DD)

In other news, people from out of the area may be reading this thread and saying to themself how do I say "Minocqua". I know that Ryan (Barefoot) master of butchering pronunciations may say something like (phonetically) Min-OCH-U-Way. The July dates and Minoqua sound good to us, we'll mark the calendar. We'd be willing to bring our X-10, not sure at the interest in wakeboarding, wakesurfing, kneeboarding or wakeskating but our boat does a descent job at those. I got a chance to try boardbreakers air chair at MM2, that sure is something different, I never really did get up on the thing, my husband got the hang of it pretty quick.
As far as bringing boats, we may not want too many boats, room might be a problem, this will depend on where we decided to stay I guess. We would be willing to tow ours up, it is only about 4 hours for us. Those thinking about coming but not sure if they want to bring a boat, leave it, unless the numbers prove we need more. There are plenty of people that live closer that can tow their's.

sounds good, I am not camping though. I will probably chip in $$ and stay at Erk's cabin if he has room, or in a hotel, but no camping.

I'm bringing a boat too. I did mention that it isn't a MasterCraft, so that may be why it didn't count. It might be my boat, it might be my friends boat, either way not a MasterCraft. Both are inboard ski machines, we would have no problem giving people a ride.

I'll be up there by myself, and am open to trying to bring a boat if needed. The model of the boat is flexible, depending on what people need/want.

I wonder if the lake can support that many boats and skiers? We need to consider that as well. Even if we can get a permit to close off a bay to ouselves we would be stickin' up our own water real fast with too many boats goin' at one time.

There is about 6000 acres of water to play on. Besides my few "secret spots" there is calm water somewhere:D

Hey Datdude
You can count me in with the wife, might bring another couple also. I would be up for camping if I still have the motorhome next year. Hotel would be ok if close to the water. Would bring a boat X30, July is good for me

Last night we were talking to our son to see if he would be interested. He always wants good skiers about his age that try creative free ski things, wakeboard, barefoot... most any creative stuff. If Whitedog and the family are coming that might be a draw because his kids are similar in age.
By any chance can/will a jump be available????? He would be all over that.
