I need to pull my gas tank and clean it, but I have one problem...it is over half full. Any suggestions as to what to do with over 12 gallons of unusable gasoline??

How "unusable" is it?

I had my carb rebuilt just about a month ago and the guy said it was covered in sediment and residue. I thought this was strange since I had only had the boat for 2 months and the carb was rebuilt just before I purchased it. He told me to run the boat and bring the carb back to him in two weeks so he could look at it and rebuild it again (for free--this guy is awesome, if you are in the Tulsa area and need some carb work then PM me). The boat ran great for a week and a half or so and then began cutting out again. From the description this guy gave of the build up on the carb I don't even think I would run the fuel through a lawn mower....

Siphon it out, strain it, mix it with some 93 octane and use it a unusable lawnmower, unusable car, truck, gas trimmer, leafblower, chainsaw, hedgetrimmer, etc. but I wouldn't just throw it away.

I have heard some horror stories recently about the additives in today's gasoline causing irreversible brain and other types of damage to people siphoning. Think they are factual??:(

Agreed. Siphoning is bad. Would one of those oil pumps (you run with a drill) pick up gasoline? If so, you could prime the hose with that and then let gravity take over. It probably still has a useful thermal content; dont chunk it.

the girlfriend immediately shot down the idea of beers and a bonfire so that option is out. Some might argue that she is smarter than I...

Try Seafoam it is in a red and white can at any friendly neighborhood auto parts store. Takes condensation/ crud out of gas/ cleans lines/ carburator/ you name it, just read the label. Can even put directly into carb for cleaning... Can says you can add it to oil too! Didn't try that... Made mine stop acting up!!

you just pour it into the existing gas?

Uh, don't worry about the additives, worry about the gasoline.:(

I would try the Seafoam. I have heard it works really well. I would NOT use anything electric to siphon gas.......one spark and kiss your sweet......well you know the ending. If you have to siphon the tank check with an oil recycler they may allow you to mix it with used waste oil.

I have a hand crank siphon pump by black and decker that you turn by hand and once the fuel or whatever begins to flow you turn the handle backwards once and it siphons out, you never touch anything.

[QUOTE=TMCNo1]Siphon it out, strain it, QUOTE]

You can use one of those Kerosene bulb type hand pumps to get the fluid started draining, then let it do it's thing. Just add a long tube that fits on the pickup tube to go to the bottom of the boat gas tank, cut at a angle. While it's running in the container, filter it thru a paint strainer.

I was thinking about a portable, battery-powered drill, but great point trickskier! Along those same lines, I like what chudson and TMCNo1 propose....safe and simple. Filtering while draining is a great idea.

That is one way, I suggest reading the can.

I would be VERY CAUTIOUS about using a AC or DC powered drill around gasoline and gas fumes. Drills do spark and we wouldn't like to hear about a burnt up human or boat here on TT!

Right, which is why I said in my latest posting that your idea was far surperior to mine. Great points indeed.

They've got some good manual pumps that ought to do the job. They've got some good siphon pumps at WalMart made for the portable cans with no personal contact required. Could probably adapt to the tank to get a good seal somehow.

I have siphoned gas for years working on old Motorcycles. I have a 12 foot 3/4 inch hose which I use to get the flow going and then let gravity take over into a "bad gas" container. I then take it to the local oil recycler and he mixes it with the used oil. I would not think twice about doing it but maybe I'm used to it or I have burned off all the good brain cells. Seriously, I have not had gas in my mouth or fumes in my lungs in years but if you are worried buy a manual pump as East Tx suggests and then take it to your local recycler.

On second thought - Bon Fire

Pour the gas on an unlit fire the day of the Bon Fire and let it soak in a while to let the fumes burn off and decay the ozone somemore then ..........

How about killing 2 problems at once.
Carefully siphon it out, then give it to the PWC owners that frequent where you ski.

I brew beer as my second hobby, and you can not have anything touch the beer once it is in the fermenter because it will "grow" and spoil the beer. So to do this, I start with a sanitized hose and use boiled water, but you can skip those steps for gasoline.

In any case get a hose long enough to reach to the bottom of the gas tank and then reach down to the ground where you will put your gas can or other receiver. Fold the hose in half and start filling it with gas. Since liquid seaks its own level, as you fill one side it will go around the curve at the bottom (where it is folded) and fill both halves of the hose. Fill it all the way until you see gas near the top of both ends. Then put your thumb over one end. You can now drop the other end lower then the end with your thumb, and you will only lose about an inch or two of gas due to the vacuum created by your thumb plugging the other end. While keeping your thumb in place, stuff the free end into the gas filler all the way to the bottom of the tank. You may lose a bit more gas, but it should not be enough to effect the vacuum pull. Now if you drop the end with your thumb toward the ground and into your receiver container it will create a big vacuum as the liquid flows out of the hose. If it is under the level of the liquid in your gas tank it will draw mor fluid up into the hose and as that liquid makes it over the side of the boat and toward the ground it will continue the siphon. This will work with any liquid as long as the hose is completely full and you do not loose the position of your thumb that is holding the vacuum as you move the free end around. (Think about playing with a straw as a kid) Works great, the liquid never touches anything other then the hose, and if you get the end down low in the tank it will nearly empty the tank completely. Make sure you have enough capacity in your receiver container, but if you need to stop to change, just put your thumb over the end as you move from one container to the next and it will continue the siphon after you release your thumb again.

Good Luck.

Steve

I have done this the traditional method and tasted gas too many times.

Things I've done in the past that don't seem right anymore......
Fire on the water, really cool to watch gallons of gas burn on water at night.
Fire on the road, great fun until you see car coming and try to put out...
Instant bon fire.
Save it for yellow jacket nests and other varmits.

Seriously gas is dangerous stuff, I feel lucky to be here now! Gas, firecrackers, guns, and pickup trucks were always fun.

I sure am glad to see people in other parts of the country, like to have fun like us Southern Rednecks.

Have you ever put a buddy in the trunk with catsup on his arm hanging out of the trunk and gone from gas station to gas station asking to borrow a shovel?
