I used to use the Maquires - "Show Car Glaze" then their yellow wax... on a Bu that I had... It would look great.....

The first time I did our MC I used the Yellow Wax (#22?) then I read about everyone using Babes.....

Have tried it - Not sure - But I might still wax some aside from Babes...

wash boat, then meguiars mirror glaze, then their premium flagship marine wax. is that enough to bring the gel to a deep, wet shine???

after a good wash and dry;
Meguiars #1 Cleaner, on with a 6" orbital buffer, on with a terry cloth pad, off with a tee shirt by hand
Meguiars #2 Swirl Remover, same same
Meguiars #3 Carnuba Wax, same same, followed by lambs wool pad on the buffer. I use the 6" hand held orbital buffer, twice a year, that's it.

Also same as Meguiars #7 Seal and Reseal Glaze, to remove buffer swirl marks, fine scratches and add oils and nutrients back to the paint, much like hand lotion does to the hands, but skin grows back and paint doesn't.

I might have to try some of the Babes products I hear a lot of you talking about but on the interior, I highly recommend Lexol Vinylex. I've been using it for the last 6 years and you can see the results, it is not glossy or greasy, it penetrates the vinyl without all of the harmful stuff like Armor All and Son of Gun, and offers excellent UV resistance.

should i use my glaze everytime before I wax? will that help keep the shine.
what does the cleaner in step 1 do??

bret
08-23-2006, 04:06 PM
The cleaner just gets off any grime, embedded dirt that you can't see, it get the coating ready for wax. I do my boat twice a year; once when it comes out for spring and I did it about two weeks ago and that should take me through late October, early November depending on weather. I keep my boat on the lift most of the time so I take it out to wax.

DooSPX
08-23-2006, 06:18 PM
can you pick up the cleaner at any autoparts store? how often should I apply the glaze.
im going to pick up the cleaner and polish....
so I will have a 4 step waxing process. lol
step 1: cleaner
step 2: meguiars marine/rv polish
step 3: meguiars mirror glaze
step 4: meguiars premium flagship marine wax (black boat on front of bottle)

when should a product like 3M's Perfect-It II #05973 Rubbing Compound be used? only to remove light scratches and oxidation only?

bret
08-24-2006, 07:55 AM
I would skip your step two if that glaze is a swirl remover.

I would only use the compound if the cleaner won't remove the scratches. You might try a clay bar before the compound, keep it moist though.

east tx skier
08-24-2006, 11:09 AM
I used the clay bar on a car with some overspray on it once. Wow, what a shine. $20 well spent IMO.

DooSPX
08-24-2006, 11:27 AM
would it hurt to use meguiars boat polish and their glaze together???
on autos, they say you should use a polish then a glaze then a wax for the best possible shine on paint.... is gelcoat the same??

BrianM
08-24-2006, 11:39 AM

bret
08-24-2006, 01:17 PM
what proof? That'll take the wax off!!

Gel coat is not clear coated like most of the autos of today. So you need somthing to nourish, replenish the shine. cleaner, swirl remover - glaze, and wax, then you can polish on the wax with lambs wool...or one other method: ice cold water in a spray bottle, mist the surface you just waxed, and dry that off with a clean tee shirt or soft terry cloth towel. The cold water will islolate any wax residue left and you'll pull that off when you wipe it down - that's my last secret; old paints like my 87 944 turbo, the black paint was a SSE, single stage enamel. So after you put nutrients back into the paint, no matter how good and patient you are, you get a few streaks in the paint - cold water will eliminate those.

Bret, you got it down to a science! It's in the details, right?

DooSPX

08-24-2006, 02:35 PM
Harold, got a question: since your underwater gear is polished, does it hum like the 25th Limited Editions did? Mark Redmans boat started humming at 28mph and drove me nuts.

As long as I have time or make time to "apply" the science. I'm like you, I just like seeing it done right and looking at the results.

An extra step never hurt Doo, just don't get it to where you wear yourself out or you're going "damn, one more time" then it's not fun.

Yea, I polished my rudder first, then the prop and finally the fins and strut over 3 years. It wasn't until the fins were done did it whine at 28 to 34 mph. Most people thought, with the 25th Anniversary boats something was wrong with the transmission or something, till some of us who had the whine with the polished items, told MC what it was. Most of those boat owners never did keep the items polished, so the sound went away when the really got dull. Mine stop whining after 3 or 4 trips to the lake without polishing. It's something we just live with and learn to enjoy after 14 years, just be purrdy! Personally, I think it's neat, and you can't hear it outside the boat.

I almost took a picture with a bottle of 303 in the trash as a joke. ;)

The vinylex isn't greasy at all where the 303 tended to be. I want to give it another once over. I just wanted to give the first application a chance to sink in.

Thanks, Bret. My interior is far from perfect, which is why I have a back up interior in the upstairs closet. :) But that stuff really restores the luster to say the least.

I always wipe it down at the ramp before going home and again at home with a damp towel. One coat of Meguiers #16 paste wax each winter, deck, sides and bottom, except about every 3 or 4 years wax with Meguiers Cleaner Wax [Clear Coat Safe, Maroon bottle, p/n A-1216], then a coat of #16. Hey guys, I found out who bret is! I did some PMing Friday night!
We met him and his wife 13 years ago, in Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1993, when we towed the boat out there to display it and conduct the judging at a reunion. Don't let him kid ya'll about me teaching him much. When he pulled into the parking lot on Thursday [I think?] his Rig glowed like a Christmas tree. He knows his stuff and they are 1st class people.

Well, I can't take all the credit for the shine since I have only been maintaining it since picking the boat up in June, but it sure is nice to see the reflection of the water in the hull. :)

Just checking in for Doos pics...thank you Harold, it was truely a pleasure to meet you, your wife and your daughter that year. Wasn't your daughter skiing with April Coble at the time? We're going to try to make one of the reunions next year.

I got out my "knobs" the other night. I polished the one for the gear shift, the one for the ski pylon, and then polished the custom trick release with the brass trip plate, they hadn't been out of the felt since Lake Lewisville Reunion.

Yea, she skied with April and Karen Truelove for 4 years @ UNC and still talks to them from time to time, sees them at boat shows and has even gone to Lillington to the Ski School to visit.

Seems to me, like everyone spends way too much time buffing thier boats... and not near enough time skiing behind them. Well I guess the only reason I say that is cuz I'm jealous of the Gloss. Hence the reason I posted with no picture...

Naaa... But I guess I could....

The main thing is I spent close to the cost of NEW PS 190 last year on the house renovation...... Hell, it can take care of itself for a while...

Needless to say - I ain't got a wife to b$%# at me about it....

303 - Everytime I see that I laugh - we use 5 gal buckets of 303 (Hydraulic Oil) up at the ranch.... Same stuff Eastie? :D

okay, so far I have used the cleaner and polish w/ the orbital on half of the boat. I must say, the cleaner did the most on the boat. WOW!
next, is to do the other half / side...
then, the machine pro glaze and the meg. flagship wax

pics to come....

im sorry they are not that great. my camera, takes really bad pics at night in the garage with the lights on.
but, you can see the reflections, and everything.
I will get good outside pics when the boat is done.

Doo, that looks great. So does that black.

Ric, ets is right. We couldn't agree on $$ on the overseas project, we stayed put and glad I did now. I hit the slalom course for the first time this summer last week (rotator cuff all summer, same old $hit from college) and had forgotten how good the wake is behind a 94. Ran some decent 15 off passes, then 5 @ 22, but I was winded!! No matter how much you work out, run, walk, jog - that first series of passes will wear your butt out.

The boat looks great on the topside Harold but it looks like you might be slipping a bit. What's that brown stuff on the keel?

Your busting me here, must be the dead reflection of the floor, believe me it ain't gunk!:D

If he tried that he would slip right off and crack his head! There is nothing that would be able to stay on that bow without sliding around. :D

If mama dropping me on my head as a baby didn't do it, then sliding off the bow did the job, bub, bub, bub, bub, bub!

I use the program "BasementShop", not quite as High Tech, more hands on, but the rewards are much greater and satisfying!
