Do all 96 PS190 make a noise when in reverse, or older MasterCrafts for that matter?. It is like a whistle or something. It does not act up or anything. It runs perfectly. I am just curious because some friends of ours have a 2002 MC197 Tournament boat and it does not make this sound. This is our first MasterCraft and we have owend it since August of last year.

I have an 88' PS 190 that does make a whislte type sound in reverse. I was told it was normal and not to worry about it. JimN would be the best one to answer that question, and give an explination as to why it makes the sound

Thanks, I was hoping it was normal.
I wonder if it is similar to when you backup quickly in a car and it makes a whining noise. I think it has something to do with the shape of the gear. This is not the same noise but may be caused by something similar.

I have a '94 and the tranny makes a whirring noise when in reverse...told it was normal... :steering:

I can't think of an inboard I've driven that didn't do this.

Yeah, I was just wondering because my friends 2002 197 didn't do this...

Wow! Really? They just keep building a better mousetrap down in Vonroe!

I kind of like the noise. It lets me know what my wife, or driver, is doing while I'm in the water.

Kind of like the warning sound the garbage trucks make when they back up.

Or that sound of hydraulic motors sucking air before you touch 200 yards short of a runway...

Sort of, but more on the reassuring side. ;)

/bounced a plane on the pads once ... that was enough.

Yeah, once is usually enough to dissuade any and all 'brain-fart' type errors. If that whirring noise in reverse is a problem, I think I need to get to a mechanic but I thought they all did it. My old Tristar did it and the new Prosport does it. I think it's natural right? Does anyone else get a vibration, sort of like a cavitation when you go to reverse with any forward momentum? Let me know fellers.

As a general rule, I think it's normal (but see above). As for the grumbling noise if you reverse it when you've got some forward momentum, I've seen several do this, too. Mine does it, but it's more of a low rumbling noise rather than a vibration.

Yeah, same story, just reminds me of a ship cavitation when all reverse is given. Much less violent of course but the prop is going to compact water in any event. Anything is better than that IO crunch sound...makes my hair stand up.

my '98 190 powerslot made all types of whining/rattling noises in reverse  - dealer told me the same thing, normal (and worse with a ps tranny).
