Okay I kinda blurb this issue before but didn't get to many takers so I am going to start a thread for it.

While riding behind my new X2 (second jump to be exact) I heard a pop! uh oh :(

Went to the hospital on Sunday and the Doc (funny old man but thats a whole other story in it's self) said that I sprained it. Now as I stated above "My new X2" I am really in need of riding behind it ASAP.

Question??? Has anyone ever sprained their MCL? How long were you out?

I have a need to get back out there and can't take this down time. Doc says 6 weeks but I am already almost walking normal with limited pain :))

I would take the 6 weeks to recover.
If you tear the MCL, ACL or both you will be out a lot longer. Just ask Tex.

I have half of each of them left (ACL and MCL) and take the time to recover and use this next off season to strengthen your hamstrings.

Off season? I live in San Diego off season is only Feb! Good advice thx. Really want to go

I think 1 weekend off should be okay with a brace right????

Sorry, I didn't notice the location. This does make it harder but I'd really be more concerned with recovering and rehabing it. The less time you spend strengthening it will mean more time to recover if you really tear it up. I'd spend the time now.

Buy a Sky Ski and start foiling, way more fun the boarding and your knees are fine....jmho

Since last fall, I've not put a board or ski on. Just the foil baby!

Good luck healing....

I sprained my mcl back in the day. I was in good shape at the time and only took a day off. Just listen to your body and don't do anything crazy.

Your MCL is not one of those little ligaments that heal quickly. It may feel fine while you are walking around but the first time you put some pressure on it, especially if it's the same movement that injured it to begin with, you could be looking at a tear. If it's already weak from the sprain/strain you don't want to risk a tear. If you do end up with a tear a would be 6 week heal time can easily turn into a 18 week heal time after you finish surgery and rehab. You are way better off taking the 6 weeks now. If you really want to push your luck do a different activity. So if you hurt it boarding just ski instead. The only way I would board within the 6 week time is if you have a hinge brace. But, it's just my opinion and it's all a game of risk vs reward. Good luck.

You didn't mention getting an MRI. I would be suspicious of a diagnosis of only a sprain until one was done. Good luck. Bill Z

ER doctors are trained to evaluate and treat emergencies, but the nuances of diagnosis of a knee injury are best left to an orthopedic surgeon. I would be leery of a knee-injury diagnosis by an ER doc. Prematurely working a knee injury could easily do more damage and I would recommend against pushing your recovery until you had it properly diagnosed by someone who specializes in such injuries and has done a proper exam and appropriate x-ray or MRI diagnostic studies.

I second Gr8smiles' suggestion about hydrofoiling - no stress on the knees or ankles. I have a buddy that sprained his ankle badly - couldn't ski, but I taught him to hydrofoil in the interim and he hasn't been on a ski since.

Great advice all. I will hold off on the boarding. Unfortunately the Foil is a non starter for us californians I think they were banded here. Not 100% on that though. I will be going out this weekend but I am just going to do the driving. thx again

I'd be astonished if that was true..especially since the company that makes the Sky Ski is located in Redding, California.

I've never heard of any state-wide ban on hydrofoiling. I could envision some private lakes restricting some towable water devices, but a statewide sanction against hydrofoiling is beyond my imagination - even Kalifornia ;) .
