SWITCH Whirlybird. This is my buddy Todd Anthony, a regular of my boat crew. He flat kills it. Not the best landing on this particular one, but he did land it and stomps these regularly. Sequence work by Nathan Hudson, don't remember who took the pic.

Switch Whirly, nice...if he has those dialed, he should try a switch Big Worm. Only a few out there doing that move. Nice capture.

In the flats or off one wake or roller? I'm sure someone has landed one. You'd really have to create some edging and pop to do it in the flats without a wake.....even a really good wakeboarder would have a tough time rotating that quick.

SKI*MC
07-25-2006, 11:55 PM
I know someone who has landed it, but i have never seen anyone land it, besides this one "nameless" person.

Skeeler: What is the process for making the sequence shots?
.
.
I use PhotoShop CS2.

Start with a canvas twice the size of one of the original images. Put the image in the sequence that is "centered" in terms of framed in the image in the middle of the canvas. Start adding the images (as new layers) one at a time to the centered image. Every time you add an image, change the opacity to about 50% so you can see what you are doing when your arranging them. I then erase the content in the added layer I do not need. Then after doing this to each layer, I move there opacity to 100%, crop, and save!

Another helpful hint, even before you get to the computer. For all of you shooting with Digital SLR's, if you are shooting form the boat. (A stationary point.) When the rider is in the middle of the wake, focus on the rider using the auto focus point. Also make sure the you have enough dept of field to capture the entire sequence! After you have your focus point, leave all the settings, and shut the AF off and switch to MF. This way, as you hold down the shutter thru the sequence, the rider will be in focus thru the whole scene. A lot of times, the AF will grab the background, making the rider out of focus. Hope that helps.

How do you get so close to the boarder? I would think huge zoom lense, but how is the flash still that bright at the distance. Is he boarding on 20' rope? Are you riding in a tube at 50' and he has a 60' rope?

Curious...

Sorry guys, I'm not pro. Just get lucky sometimes. :D Using a Canon 20D. Looking to upgrade soon, hopefully. Nothing wrong with the 20D at all, but the new 30-40D has a way bigger lcd screen. Comes in handy when you are spot checking the images when it's in the underwater housing. Headed out to the lake in about 3hrs with the wife and kids. So I should have some good pics by Tuesday. :D

Hi skeeler,

I'm in the market for a decent DSLR camera (inspired by you) to take photos with. Well, that and the wife wants a nice camera to take pictures of the kids :)

Win-win I guess hehe

Anyway, I'm in the low end of the price market ~$500-$700(baby #2 on the way). What camera would you recommend?

I know of

Canon 20D (you have)
Nikon D80
Nikon D40
Pentax K100D
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT
Olympus Evolt E-330

Any thoughts on these?

Thanks,

Hell ya! Jump in with both feet! As far as recommendations, I can only comment on the Canons. I have no idea where to start with the others.
.
You could go with the digital Rebel, but one word of advise (which I always learn the hard way) save and spend the money for the one you want right off the bat. With fast action sports, the higher the fps (frames per second) the better. The Rebel is good but the 20/30/40D would be better. A little more durable case, and more pro like level performance.
The good part about going with the Rebel though, is if you upgrade bodies down the road the lenses are interchangeable. I hope that helps!

Canon makes a good camera and lenses. I prefer Nikon, myself, based mostly on ergonomics, better handling, and easier controls IMHO. I shoot RAW entirely and Nikon's Capture NX handles those better than any other program I've seen including Photoshop CS3. I only use Photoshop for layering and coloring these days. These were taken with a D2H - killer camera IMHO - served me very well for almost 3 years. I'm looking forward to the D3 when it comes out.

For those of you with DSLR's; do you shoot in the RAW format?Always - I would never shoot seriously in JPEG. If I'm making prints, I edit in RAW format (sharpening and color balance is much more accurate, and it's the only way you can adjust exposure). I then save them both as RAW and as a high res JPEG. I then upload the JPEG to Kodak. If I'm doing a 20x30, or anything bigger than 11x17, or something for a show, I up-res in Photoshop using a standard bi-cubic algorithym and upload it to White House Custom Color in St. Paul - they do a fantastic job, although they're not cheap. They will accept the image in RAW (.nef) format, but I need to provide printer ICC file information.

bigmac,

I'm also considering the D80 except the lower fps makes me wonder if it will be good enough for sequence shots?:confused:I'm not aware of any dSLR+lens, Canon or Nikon, that will get you more than 3 frames-per-second for less than $1000. In that price range, you're looking at Canon Rebel, or Nikon D40, D50, D80 - all 3 fps.

76S&S
09-10-2007, 04:23 PM
I have the Canon Rebel and it is 3 fps. With my boys behind the boat that usually equates to 2 air shots on a jump or maybe a take off, air and landing shot. For mostly casual picture taking I couldn't justify the difference in cost between the Rebel and others.

With the exception of 5 fps, this camera will do everything and more that I was looking for.

I'm just starting to shoot in the RAW format which is where you can really adjust your shots.

It looks like I can get the Canon 30D on ebay NEW w/ kit lens for ~$1,000.! :)

I think I will be pulling the trigger soon.

We went and looked at the 20D and D80 in person tonight.

The only 2 things the D80 could do that was better was:

1. you could put it in continuous mode for any of the scene settings. The Canon could only go into continuous mode on the Sports setting and the Portrait setting.

2. Looking through the eye piece on the D80 was just more ergonomic and clearer than the 20D.

BUT that 5 fps could really fire off fast :)

Make sure you're getting a USA version and not gray market. Also, make sure the seller is an authorized Canon reseller. If neither of those things are true, you will have warranty issues if you ever need repair.

Nice pic!!!

Olympus 770SW. It's a pocket-sized point 'n shoot that just happens to be made a little more rugged. Freeze proof, shock proof, crush proof and waterproof. Of course there are limitations to each, but it's waterproof 10m or 33ft, whichever comes first! :D

I haven't been overly impressed with photo quality, but in all reality I probably haven't spent enough time figuring out how to use it correctly. However, being able to take it in/underwater makes up for it.

SDA...love the Murray handle. Had the previous year and warrantied it out due to grip separation. This one has been nice, comfy, and solid so far. Check out the Ronix 1(?) with the chamoi(sp?) type handle too. I've used one a few times and it left a good impression.

:twocents: I was just about to pull the trigger on the 20D and when my wife compared that side by side with the Nikon D80 and said "how come I can see thing so much better in the Nikon viewfinder?"

It was a HUGE difference. So we didn't buy anything b/c the Canon is the only camera that has the fps we wanted for that price range.

I noticed the new 40D is advertised with a newer brighter viewfinder.

I want to go check it out to see if they really improved it or not. If they did, hopefully, I can get a good deal on one next year when they're not so new.

There are a few really good places to look for cameras. KEH.com and B&H Photo are the two best. Canons are far superior to Nikons. I shoot with a Canon and love it. It's not so much the camera though, that is what trips people up, it is the lenses. The canon L-Series lenses bury the competition. Don't take my word for it, look at 80% of the pro shooters on the sidelines of major sporting events and 100% of SI's shooters. They all sport those white lenses.

The best mode to shoot in is RAW+JPEG (Large). That way you have the best of both worlds, the versatility of capturing the RAW image and the ease of using the JPEG.

When I shoot wakeboard shots I have two lenses that I use depending on what I am going for. I have a 70-200 2.8L and a 100-400 3.5-5.6 L IS. I can get a good shot of your expression with the 100-400 but the 70-200 2.8 might be the best zoom ever built (hence the $1600 price tag).

A 20D to a 40D is going to do everything that you would ever want. If you want to break the bank go for a 1DS Mark III.

Remember though, it's the lens that gets the shot.

Sounds good. Call ahead of time and make sure the plant will be up and running when you plan to go. The lake is pretty wide open for the most part as far as hazards go. I do recall that there are some stumps off to one side of the ramp (the right side if you're standing on the ramp looking at the water). Also, as you're driving out to the lake, when you turn toward the plant, I seem to recall you don't want to be too far to the right). I think it's pretty obvious when you're out there (branches sticking out of the water in the bad spots) and pretty easy to avoid the bad spots.

My boys went to a clinic last year that Nick Weinacker taught. Great coaching but not enough water time.........too many participants. Nick rode a couple of times and we got a great show.

I've got a pick of one of my boys like the one of Trevor above.......it is one of my favorites from that day.

Thanks! I can't wait until it gets alittle nicer here in MI so we can ride more than once or twice a week. I hope to have a ton of pics by the end of the season.

What lens are you using for that and how do you have the camera set up?

Canon 40d, with Canon 70-200 f4l is! I had the camera on shutter priority, and ISO at 200. The fastest i could get the camera, with the ISO at 200, was 1/1000 at f4. Which should be fast enough for what I'm shooting. I don't think i was allowing the camera enough time to AF in on the rider. I was going to push the ISO up to 400, but I thought I had enough light to leave it at 200. I'm not sure if i should have the Camera on All Servo, All Focus, or One Shot?

try pushing it up to 800 and set it at 1/500th at f4. Set it to All Servo. Use the AF lock button on the back of the camera to hold focus instead of using the shutter as it will hold the focus better.

If you are shooting in RAW don't worry so much about the white balance as you can easily fix that later. Get the shot with a crisp focus and you will be good. Experiment with the ISO and exposure and you will get some great shots.

I've got a Canon 30D and have been using this for a little over a year and have had quite a bit of experience with shooting sports especially NASCAR at night. (extremely tricky) I've found that you want to try and leave the ISO as low as you can for better exposures. Stuart is correct by setting to AI Servo position but also try to change your focal point to center and focus on the subject this will get the lens to focus a little faster directly on the subject also try using a polarizer filter on the lens to help with glare from the water.

Here's one I took at the Coca-Cola 600 in May 2007 after dark with no flash and the 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens. Jr's car was very hard to focus on because of the colors this year.
