View Full Version : Noise from MCX - any thoughts??

We have a 05 197 with an MCX and this weekend we got a different kind of squeak (not the noise from the air being pulled through the K&N filter).

It sounds like a loose fan belt in a car. Anybody else had this problem or thoughts on what it could be or how to fix it?

I can only hear it at idol bot in gear and neutral (but may be present at higher speeds, just can't hear it then because of the motor noise).

Everyone is so good at helping each other out .... can anyone help?

I forgot to mention that all the belts seem tight and no loose fittings that I could find.

Spray a little water on the pulley and see if it goes away. The serpentine belts do glaze, so it could be caused by that.

Pulley?? Sorry - - I'm not a mechanical nut, could you describe where the pully is?

You're kidding, right?

Yep - - thanks for the info. I didn't realise that smiles didn't work in the reply unless you were in the advanced reply. :)

I'll give that a try ...

Has anyone else had this issue (not that I'm doubting Jim's suggestion)?

check all the mounting brackets for the accessories, PS pump, Alternator etc, make sure everything is secure.

Water like Jim said.
And make sure the belt isn't TOO tight.

Is there any way to determine if it's too tight? Ususally I pull on it with one finger and see if there's a little give.

Jim, would 303 work, or is water the best?

Could the noice have been coming from the blower?

Water dries, 303 could leave a residue. It may also be more of a lubricant and then the belt will definitely slip.

How, many hours do you have on your engine. I have an '04 x-star with the mcx and 103.3 hours. I noticed the same noise for the first time Sunday afternoon. I orginally thought is was the blower, but made the noise with the blower off.

it's not the blower (happens with the blower on and off). We have about 90 hrs on the engine. i called our dealer also and they thought to check the tightness of the belt (too loose or tight) and also check the impeller.

Not to jump to any conclusions, but could this possibly be something on the MCX with it gets around 100 hrs on it?

Take a bar of soap and while the engine is running at idle, hold it up against both sides of the flat parts of belt for about 5 seconds and see what happens! If sound stops, it was just belt squeak! Silicone spray, using a straw will do the same thing in most cases. I've been using it on the serpentine belt on our '88 Astro Van for 17 years and it goes away for about 1500 miles then returns, even with a new belt.

I have an 05 MCX with 200+ hours on it. I have not heard any weird noises from it.

did you check the impellor?

Check the alternator bolts. I had the same noise from the belt before my bolts snapped.

I hope that no one sticks anything anywhere near the belt drive system while the engine is running, this would be very dangerous and unsafe, please do not do this, if you want to apply belt dressing do it with the engine OFF !

Were the bolts cracked or bent any way?

They were usually too hard and brittle. There was a recall at one point and since it was GM's bolt vendor, I think MC basically covered them under warranty as a goodwill gesture. That was in about '98 or '99 and I would hope GM didn't go back to the same vendor.

Me too. My '04 MCX started making that noise at about 10 hours. When I took it in at 20 hours for first-service, they told me that 2 of the 3 bolts were completely broken. They replaced the bolts and put on an upgraded bracket.

OK - so we put a little water on the pully and it took care of the noise:) :) We did this on Sat and the noise didn't come back on Sun either ... but that brings me to yet another question.

Now my question is - - Will I have to put a few drops of water on the pulley every time out or every other because the water will evaporate?
