How to close X-Star Floor Hatch

Is there any way to slide the center floor-board (the one you remove to see the gas tank) edge back under the seat fiberglass other than slamming the front edge with a rubber mallet?
The carpet gets stuck and it won't slide no matter how much I wiggle it, so I have to use a mallet and I'm worried about damaging the edge of the floorboard (though it seems to be tough fiberglass and metal).

The carpet-against-carpet friction is probably causing the problem. Maybe if you put some wax paper or something similar between the panel and the floor it would slide in easier? Then just pull the paper out.

Its the carpet of the floor panel trying to slide under the bottom edge of the seat fiberglass. Its a really tight fit. Pushing it or wiggling the floorboard back and forth will not work.
