I just bought a 91 190 . I bought a battery w/ 750 cold cranking amps and sometimes it sounds a weak turning over and sometimes it sounds great. DO I need more amps or could it be the starter is getting old.

Make sure the battery cable ends are good and clean, the ground cable is on clean metal and the bolt or stud is tight. Disconnect the battery negative and loosen the starter bolts, drop the starter and look at the mating surfaces and clean them anyway. While the starter is off, lube the Bendix shaft and reinstall it. If the starter is good, it may show an improvement from all of this. If it's not, it won't and will need to be checked out or rebuilt. Better now than on the water.

Jim, I'll do it. Where's the Bendix shaft and should 750 cca be plenty?

750 cca is more than enough.

The Bendix is the gear that slides out when the starter is cranked. Rotate manually and it will move out if you turn it opposite of the way it rotates when you start the motor. In the other direction, it won't move easily. If it's really hard to move in both directions, think about having it rebuilt.

FYI, greasing the starter is a sheduled annual service procedure.
